As people get older, their risk for type 2 diabetes increases. In fact, one in four people over the age of 60 have diabetes. If you already have diabetes, you may find that you need to adjust how you manage your condition as the years go by. Diabetes can affect many major organs in your body, which can lead to an array of serious complications when left untreated. We heard Deborah Plante, MD Endocrinologist, Dignity Health Medical Center, speak about how diabetes is treated and often prevented. Q and A followed.

Elections Committee Opening

The Elections Committee is responsible for the nomination and qualification of candidates for election to the Board of Directors, and for conducting the election. Unlike other Standing Committees of the Board, the Elections Committee and its Chair are appointed each year for the next election.

The Board is accepting applications for the 2014 Elections Committee. The Term of the appointment runs through March 30, 2014. The Board interviews the applicants and appoints the Committee Members. Applications are available at the Orchard Creek and Kilaga Springs Activities desks or download the Committee Application from the Association Resident Form folder in the Document Library on the Resident website. DMV Update for Seniors - Community Forum 5-15-2013

John Lochner from the DMV Senior Ombudsman Program presented the latest and increased DMV efforts to address senior mobility. Ombudsmen can assist as a "go-between" to ensure that senior drivers are treated fairly, consistently within the laws and regulations, and with dignity and respect they deserve, including individual efforts for licensing, etc. Shannon Lewis, former DMV employee and independent DMV advocate made a presentation and answered questions. Q and A followed.

Players in the commercial space flight arena were compared, NASA’s current build program presented, and an ISS/partner update. Speaker Nick Poppelreiter has compiled a unique comparison of past, present and future spacecraft not to be missed! Nick spends his free time away as a Solar System Ambassador representing NASA JPL away from his software engineer life. Q&A followed.

How can we strengthen and take care of our bones through lifestyle changes? Dr. Michael Okimura discussed osteoporosis and how we test for it. What is the role of vitamin D? Are supplements needed? How much and which kind? How do medications affect osteoporosis and bone health? Dr. Okimura is the Medical Director of the Bone Density Service and Medical Weight Management Program for Kaiser Permanente, and serves as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCD.

Residents Dave Rich (moderator), John Parks, DVM, and Dr. Howard Liebgold, MD, lead this highly acclaimed discussion. The panellists’ humor and facts helped understand snakes and their role better. We heard firsthand what it’s like to be bitten by a rattlesnake and learned the truth behind many myths, and other truly helpful things.
